He gives the protagonist the "freedom" to not choose the outcome of the universe; he puts him to sleep for a very long time. To demonstrate how long, they show that, when the protagonist wakes up again, his phone's battery is long dead, and his room is riddled with cobwebs. He has no more will or motivation to get out of bed, and just goes back to sleep.
